All sports can help develop the character of its participants. But no sport or activity at the high school level can build character in young men like wrestling can. Wrestling gives a more realistic simulation of the roller coaster ride of a person’s life. The peaks and valleys, the joys and the heartaches are all included In the short career of a wrestler. One learns how to be a survivor, to overcome and endure the toughest situation, to deal with but never accept defeats, to adjust and adapt when placed in precarious positions in order to survive and come back ready to face a new set of challenging circumstances the next day. Wrestling demands that one learn the art of teamwork and dependency on others as well as the necessity of individual hard work and commitment in order to reach one’s full potential. At the same time it requires that a person learn to stand on his own two feet and be accountable for his actions. If one has never wrestled, It is difficult if not impossible to grasp the reality of this type of accountability. I can assure you that the accountability of one’s actions on the wrestling mat is instantaneous. Commitment, dependability, hard work, team work, individual strength, and accountability are all required characteristics for success in the “real world.” I believe the degree to which these are developed will have a direct correlation on one’s personal success and contentment in life. These characteristics cannot be nurtured by sheltering and protecting the individual. In order to deal with life successfully, one must live it, experiencing both the good and the bad. Wrestling will certainly afford the individual this opportunity.

We have a saying in the sport of wrestling that best describes the type of individual who does not belong. It is short and to the point: “Wimps need not apply.” I think it is an appropriate saying for life as well.
